At least six Yemeni soldiers killed in suicide attack

At least six Yemeni soldiers were killed on Sunday in a suicide bombing in the southern province of Abyan, a local security official said.

A suicide bomber drove a car packed with explosives into a crowd of soldiers loyal to the internationally recognized government in Abyan's district of al-Wadea, the official added on condition of anonymity.

Ensuing clashes erupted between pro-government troops and suspected al-Qaeda insurgents in the area, the official said.

He did not give casualty figure.

The attack comes nearly a month after government forces, backed by an allied Saudi-led coalition, dislodged al-Qaeda fighters from Zinjibar, the capital city of Abyan.

Al-Qaeda militants has expanded its influence in southern Yemen, taking advantage of a civil war that pits the mainly Shiite rebels against the government of President Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi.

Yemen's conflict has intensified since March 2015, when the Iran-allied rebels advanced on the southern city of Aden, prompting Saudi Arabia and fellow Sunni allies to start an air campaign in Yemen against the group.

Saudi Arabia fears that the rebels will give its regional rival, Shiite Iran, a strategic foothold on the Arabian Peninsula.
