Malaysia Airlines orders 50 Boeing B737 Max jets

Malaysia Airlines has firmed up an order for 50 B737 Max jets from Boeing for a total of 5.5 billion dollars, the airline's new chief executive officer said Wednesday.

Deliveries will start in 2019. The jets are to be used for the Malaysian national carrier’s short-haul service, according to Malaysia Airlines chief executive officer Peter Bellew.

“This deal is a game-changer for Malaysia Airlines,“ he said in a statement. “This new aircraft order will set the stage for our continued recovery and success into the next decade.”

The new planes are expected to cut the airline’s operating costs, Bellew added.

Malaysia Airlines is currently undergoing rehabilitation after it suffered losses and deadly tragedies in 2014.

On March 8, 2014, Malaysia Airlines’ Beijing-bound flight MH370, with 239 people aboard, disappeared without a trace nearly an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Four months later, on July 17, flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur crashed in eastern Ukraine with 298 people aboard after it was shot down by a missile.
