Melania Trump's speech writer apologizes for plagiarism

A speech writer for Melania Trump apologized Wednesday for passages in a speech to the Republican National Convention that appeared to have been lifted from a speech by First Lady Michelle Obama.

Meredith McIver said she had offered to resign after the media uncovered the apparent plagiarism, but that Donald Trump had turned her down.

She explained that Melania Trump had read her passages from a Michelle Obama speech that she admired. McIver wrote them down and they were later incorporated into the speech given to the convention on Monday.

"I did not check Mrs Obama's speeches. This was my mistake and I feel terrible for the chaos I have cause Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs Obama. No harm was meant," McIver said in a letter released by the Trump campaign.

The issue had dominated media coverage of the convention for much of Tuesday and distracted from the Trump campaign's efforts to use Melania's remarks to humanize her husband to voters. It was compounded by the campaign's efforts to respond.

The former model's speech included the line: "From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life. That your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise. That you treat people with respect."

A 2008 speech by Michelle Obama at the 2008 Democratic convention, contained the line: "And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you're going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them, and even if you don't agree with them."
