Militants killed near Kashmir border as protests continue

The Indian army said Sunday it had killed four militants in Kashmir, as clashes between police and protesters continued in the flashpoint border state.

An army spokesman said four militants were killed near the line of control in Kupwara district. The line of control is a de facto border that divides the disputed Kashmir region in two parts, one administered by India and the other by Pakistan.

Gun battles with militants were also reported from Bandipora and Poonch districts. In Poonch district a policeman died in an operation to weed out suspected militants from a building near an army camp.

At least 20 civilians were injured in fresh clashes between government forces and stone-pelting protesters in Pulwama district, while a youth from Budgam district who was injured during protests on Saturday died at a hospital in state capital Srinagar.

Thousands of residents of Karimabad and adjoining areas of Pulwama district took to the streets on Sunday morning to protest against alleged night raids conducted by security forces, a police official said.

The protesters pelted stones at the security forces who retaliated by firing tear gas shells and pellet guns, he said.

Over 75 people, mostly young men, have died in months of clashes between police and security forces sparked by the death of Burhan Wani, a commander from the militant Hizbul Mujahideen group, who was killed on July 8.
