Moscow threatens to stop payments to doping agency WADA

Russian Sports Minister Vitali Mutko hinted Thursday that Moscow could cut off its payments to the international doping control body WADA if it does not reinstate the Russian doping agency RUSADA.

"If our organization is not soon reinstated, then what sense does it make for us to pay?" he was quoted by the sports news agency R-Sport as saying about Russia's contributions to WADA.

But he said he would not comment further on the situation while the Summer Games were still underway in Rio.

WADA (World Anti Doping Agency) is largely financed by contributions from the governments of member countries. By WADA accounts, Moscow paid the agency 400,000 dollars in 2014.

Amid the revelations of massive and systematic doping control violations in Russia, WADA last November suspended RUSADA. Its work has meantime been taken up by British experts.

On Tuesday, WADA announced it was reinstating China's anti-doping agency that had been suspended in April due to the agency's due to a non-conformity with the International Standard for Laboratories (ISL). WADA said that in the meantime, the Chinese doping agency had returned to compliance with ISL requirements.
