The Turkish government should show restraint and honour civil rights in the aftermath of the failed coup attempt, leaders of the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe (OSCE) say.
“All those that carry responsibility must adhere to the rules of democracy and the rule of law and must prevent any further bloodshed," says German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who serves as chairman of the democracy and security organization.
"Rule of law, democracy, respect for human rights and freedom of the media must be upheld even in difficult times," OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier says.
"I call on the Turkish Government and democratic institutions to exercise restraint in the aftermath of last night’s events," he says.
