Over 20 Libyan soldiers die in suicide attack claimed by Islamic State

More than 20 Libyan troops have been killed in a suicide bombing at a checkpoint near the western city of Misrata, hospital officials in the city say.

Supporters of the Islamic State extremist group, which lost ground to pro-government forces earlier in the day near its stronghold of Sirte east of Misrata, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement circulated on social media.

dpa was not able to independently authenticate the statement, which also claimed a second suicide attack in the area, but it was consistent with previous claims by the group.
