Pentagon confirms US airstrike killed Islamic State spokesman

The Pentagon on Monday confirmed that the main spokesman of the Islamic State extremist group, Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, was killed last month in northern Syria.

Al-Adnani was killed August 30 in a precision airstrike that targeted him, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said in a statement.

The Islamic State announced al-Adnani's death that same day through its social media outlets, calling him a "martyr."

The United States said he was one of the group's senior leaders. Cook said Monday his death "removes from the battlefield ISIL's chief propagandist, recruiter and architect of external terrorist operations."

The lethal airstrike was carried out near Al Bab, Syria, according to the Pentagon, which uses the acronym ISIL for the group.

Al-Adnani was notorious for his audio messages calling for attacks on Islamic State's enemies, including civilian targets in the West, and he announced the group's purported establishment of a caliphate in Syria and Iraq in 2014.

Cook described the death of al-Adnani as "one in a series of successful strikes against ISIL leaders, including those responsible for finances and military planning, that make it harder for the group to operate."

When Islamic State announced al-Adnani's death it gave no details of how he died. It said he "departed" while inspecting military operations in Aleppo province.
