Philippine volcano ejects ash in series of eruptions

A volcano in the central Philippines began spewing thick clouds of ash Saturday, one week after another volcano in an eastern province erupted, a government agency said.

No injuries were recorded after the initial series of eruptions at Mount Kanlaon on Negros Island, 520 kilometres south of Manila, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The eruptions lasting about 30 minutes produced ash plumes as high as 1.5 kilometres, the institute said.

Ashfall and light sulfuric odor were reported in villages at the foot of the volcano, it said.

"So far, we have not observed magma movement, but we are continuing to monitor,” said Phivolcs director Renato Solidum.

The institute warned the public to stay outside a 4-kilometre radius danger zone, and urged civil aviation authorities to advise pilots to avoid flying near the volcano’s summit.

Kanlaon has erupted about 30 times since 1919.

In 1996, three trekkers were killed when the volcano suddenly ejected ash and fiery rocks while they were near the summit.

Last week, Mount Bulusan in the eastern province of Sorsogon, also spewed ash and steam into the air, with no injuries reported.
