Poll: Most Republicans fear election could be stolen

A majority of Republicans say they fear the presidential election could be "stolen" from the party's candidate, Donald Trump, according to a poll released Monday.

A total of 73 per cent of Republicans said they agree with Trump's repeated recent warnings that the election could be stolen due to voter fraud, the Politico poll said.

Just 17 per cent of Democrats share the worry and 41 per cent of all voters said they think so.

The poll however continues to show Democrat Hillary Clinton with a lead over Trump, reflecting other surveys that show her holding onto a strong lead as allegations about Trump sexually assaulting women have dominated news coverage in recent days.

However, 66 per cent of voters said they were confident that their own votes would be accurately counted.

Trump has said at recent campaign rallies that the election is being rigged against him.

On Monday, he said there was "large scale voter fraud happening on and before election day."

"Why do Republican leaders deny what is going on? So naive!" he wrote on Twitter.

Clinton's campaign dismissed Trump's rhetoric as a sign Trump is faltering and said there was no evidence of a rigged system.

"Donald Trump's campaign is spiraling. He is desperately trying to shift attention from his own disastrous campaign," said Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook.

"He knows he's losing and he's trying to blame that on the system. That's what losers do."

Republican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence and Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan sought over the weekend to assure voters the election would be clean.
