President says Iran is tired of tension with outside world

Iran is tired of tension with the rest of the world, Iranian President Hassan Rowhani said Sunday, pointing to recent election results that solidly backed the country's modernizers.

"[During the 1993 presidential election], the voters opted for moderate politics and reconciliation with the world community," he said.

Although that outcome was reversed in subsequent elections, Rowhani said this year's voting show a resumed interest in such reconciliation and an easing of tensions with the rest of the world, he said.

He made the comments during a Tehran press conference.

Last month's elections saw Rowhani's reformers score big wins, notably in the strategically important Tehran district, where they took all 30 parliamentary seats and 15 of the 16 seats up for grabs in the Assembly of Experts.

"People don't want radical slogans any more. Instead they want to hear moderate sounds from this country," he said.

Rowhani said he is convinced that the government will work well with the new parliament, which is set to convene at the end of May.
