Pyongyang hits back at "hostile forces" over rocket test

Pyongyang on Sunday hit back at international criticism of its latest missile test, warning that it would take action as a "fully-fledged military power."

The UN Security Council, including North Korea's only major ally China, condemned North Korea on Friday for test-firing a ballistic missile from a submarine.

The isolated communist country had hailed the launch as the "greatest success."

The UN statement was "a product of brigandish acts of the US and other hostile forces," North Korea's state media reported.

North Korea would "continue to take a series of eventful action steps as a fully-fledged military power" in response to the statement, the official Korean Central News Agency said.

Wednesday's test alarmed regional leaders, with neighbouring China, South Korea and Japan urging the North to exercise restraint and adhere to UN resolutions which prohibit the communist country from testing missiles.

Tensions have been higher on the Korean peninsula since a series of North Korean tests - including an atomic test - at the start of the year.
