Report: Turkish police kill Islamic State suspect who plotted attack

Turkish police thwarted a suicide bombing when they killed a suspected Islamic State supporter during a raid and shootout in Ankara, the Dogan news agency reported Wednesday, citing the governor of Ankara.

The suspect, a Turkish national, was born in Adana in 1992 and lived in the south-eastern province of Diyarbakir, state-run news agency Anadolu reported.

The operation, carried out in Ankara's Eryaman neighbourhood, led to the discovery of explosives and prevented a suicide bombing planned to take place on October 29 during Republic Day festivities commemorating the founding of modern Turkey, Dogan reported.

The suspect had been seen multiple times prior to the raid in front of the massive column-lined memorial and tomb of modern Turkey's founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, located in central Ankara, according to the Dogan report.

On Monday, Ankara's provincial governor issued a ban on all public gatherings until the end of November, citing evidence of a planned terrorist attack.

Another raid on Islamic State followers in the south-eastern province of Diyarbakir led police to detain 20 suspects.

The Turkish government holds Islamic State responsible for multiple attacks across the country, most recently an attack on an outdoor wedding celebration in Gaziantep in August that left 56 people dead.
