Reports: Putschists lynched in Turkey

Soldiers carrying out an attempted coup d'etat in Turkey on Saturday night were abused or even lynched, according to unconfirmed media reports.

In a video that appears to be taken on one of the bridges spanning the Bosphorus strait in Istanbul, a soldier can be seen lying on the ground covered in blood.

"We've killed four, now we're killing the fifth. Dog!" the person making the video says in Turkish.

Another calls out: "God is great!" and "Infidel!"

Several people step on the apparently lifeless body in the video, which has been posted on Twitter.

A total of 265 people were killed in an attempted coup overnight after a group within the Turkish military announced it was seizing power to restore order.

Erdogan called on his supporters to take to the streets on Saturday to protest the putsch.

In another video, a group of people opposing the coup surround a tank as one of the demonstrators climbs the vehicle and kicks the soldier down the hatch.

A mob also slit the throat of a soldier, Turkish newspaper Sozcu, which is considered to be close to the military, reported on Saturday. The government couldn't immediately confirm the video.

dpa wasn't able to confirm the origins of the videos, which are available online.

Erdogan launched an operation to purge the armed forces, detaining 2,839 military personnel. Operations to end the coup were effectively completed by Saturday afternoon, officials said.
