Rockets fired from Gaza strike southern Israel for a second day

A rocket from the Gaza Strip landed in southern Israel on Thursday, with no injuries reported, the Israeli army said, the second such strike in two days.

Army forces were searching the Negev desert area after the rocket attack. No group has yet claimed responsibility for it.

Israeli planes had targeted a number of Hamas military posts in central and southern Gaza the day before after a rocket struck a road in the southern Israeli city of Sderot. Israeli tanks also fired shells at the area in northern Gaza where the rocket had originated.

Neither side reported injuries.

Hamas condemned what it called the Israeli escalation in attacks on Wednesday and warned there would be consequences to more airstrikes.

A Salafist terrorist group in Gaza associated with Islamic State had claimed responsibility on Twitter for the Wednesday attack, according to local media outlets.

An Israeli pilot died Wednesday while returning from Gaza after ejecting from his fighter jet while attempting to land at Ramon air force base in southern Israel, according to the Israeli Air Force.
