Russia: Bringing peace to Syria is "almost impossible"

A US-Russia brokered ceasefire in Syria could not yield results towards a political solution because of "sabotage" by moderate opposition groups in Syria that the US failed to exert influence over, says Vitaly Churkin, Russian ambassador to the UN.

"Bringing peace is almost an impossible task now," Churkin says.

"The Americans basically said that they were not able to influence their groups and thus fulfill the agreements that they wanted to see."

He says Russia needs to see "a sincere desire" to separate the moderate opposition backed by the US-led coalition from the terrorist group Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, a former al-Qaeda-linked group previously known as al-Nusra Front.
