Russia to send India S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems

Russia is expected to clinch a deal to provide India with S-400 long-range anti-aircraft missile systems, an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday.

The deal should be signed on Saturday amid talks between Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Goa, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said in comments carried by the Interfax news agency.

The S-400 is one of Russia's most advanced anti-aircraft missile systems. Ushakov did not comment on how many of the systems Russia would send to India.

Over the past five years, about 70 per cent of India's arms imports have come from Russia, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said in a report earlier this year.

India is engaged in a decades-long dispute with neighbouring Pakistan over the Kashmir region, with tensions heating up in recent months.

Russia has managed to maintain good relations with both Pakistan and India. Last month dozens of soldiers from Russia's predominantly Muslim part of the Caucasus Mountains arrived in Pakistan for joint exercises with local troops in mountainous terrain.
