Saudi-led alliance hits rebel areas in Yemen after end of peace talks

A Saudi-led military coalition mounted a series of airstrikes on rebel-held areas in Yemen Sunday, a day after UN-brokered peace talks ended without a deal.

At least eight airstrikes were carried out in the northern province of Saada, a stronghold of the Houthi rebels, locals said without reporting casualties.

Coalition jets also bombarded facilities manned by the Houthis and their allies in the north-western province of Hajjah, near the Saudi border, residents said.

The bombardment destroyed rebels' military hardware, they added.

Pro-Houthi broadcaster al-Masirah, meanwhile, reported that an unspecified number of Saudi military personnel were killed on Sunday in rebel attacks in the Saudi border towns of Najran and Jizan. There was no official comment in Riyadh.

On Saturday, UN envoy on Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed announced the end of Yemen’s peace negotiations that had kicked off in Kuwait in April.

He said that the talks would resume within a month, in a location that has yet to be specified.

However, negotiators from the Yemeni government said the talks made no headway and blamed the mostly Shiite rebels for the deadlock.

Yemen's conflict has intensified since March 2015, when the Iran-allied rebels advanced on the southern city of Aden, prompting Saudi Arabia and fellow Sunni allies to start an air campaign in Yemen against the group.

Saudi Arabia fears that the rebels will give its regional rival, Shiite Iran, a strategic foothold on the Arabian Peninsula.
