Student sentenced to prison for Erdogan insults, PKK propaganda

A student has been sentenced to several years in prison in the city of Bursa, western Turkey, for insulting the president and distributing propaganda for a banned Kurdish political organization.

The 23-year-old received an 11-month-and-20-day jail sentence for insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the DHA news agency said Friday.

Additionally, she was handed three years and nine months in prison for distributing propaganda for the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which is banned in the country and has been waging a 30-year battle with the government for greater rights and autonomy for the country's Kurdish minority.

Nearly 1,850 cases have been opened against people who were critical of the president, the justice minister said last month, adding that freedom of expression did not include the right to insult.

Her sentence resulted from material that she distributed via social media, according to DHA.

The 23-year-old claimed that she didn't understand the content of the messages, because they were in Kurdish.

She has been released from custody until a judgment is made by a court of appeals.
