Taliban seize 50, kill 12 in road ambushes

The Taliban have kidnapped more than 50 people from Afghanistan's roads and killed at least 12 in the past week, officials said Wednesday.

In the central Ghazni province, the bodies of 10 policemen and two intelligence officers were found late Tuesday, said Jawid Salangi, a spokesman for Ghazni police.

“The security forces were abducted by the Taliban on separate highways in the province" on Friday and Sunday, he said.

"They were identified by the papers and cards they had on their person."

In the northern province of Kunduz, at least 40 people were kidnapped by armed men on Wednesday.

“We do not know the identity of the hostages yet,” said Amruddin Wali, a provincial council member.

The attackers stopped two vehicles, a 50-seater Mercedes-Benz bus and a Toyota station wagon, in Khanabad district on the road from Kunduz city to Takhar early Wednesday, said Hejratullah Akbari, a spokesman for Kunduz police.

In May, the Taliban stopped a convoy of busses and kidnapped more than 150 people. Twelve were killed and many released, while eight remain in captivity.
