Third generation of Kim dynasty in control of North Korea

North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, is the third member of the Kim dynasty to rule North Korea.

Son of long-time dictator Kim Jong Il and grandson of the "eternal president" Kim Il Sung, he became Supreme Leader of the secretive Stalinist state in December 2011.

Little is known about Kim, now thought to be about 33 years old and chief commander of the military as well as chairman of the ruling Workers' Party's Central Committee.

Physically the round-faced Kim resembles his father and even more closely his grandfather. Some speculate that he may have undergone cosmetic surgery to emphasize the similarities.

His characteristic haircut - buzz-cut on the sides and long on the top - has provoked imitations and some satire around the world.

Kim Jong Un reportedly attended school in Switzerland under another name until 1998.

He is married to musician Ri Sol Ju.

Since coming to power, Kim has overseen the continued development of North Korea's nuclear programme, increasing tensions with South Korea as well as causing a diplomatic headache for its only major ally, China.

He has also undertaken a purge of top officials, allegedly for treason, including his powerful uncle Jang Song Thaek in December 2013, and reportedly the armed forces chief Hyon Yong Chol in April last year.
