Three dead, at least two injured in Jerusalem shooting, stabbing

Three militants armed with a gun, knives and explosives injured two Israeli border policewomen in Jerusalem on Wednesday, before being shot dead, police said.

One of the attackers showed an identity card to a border policewoman, while another opened fire, and the third began stabbing, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said.

Two border policewomen were listed in critical and serious condition.

The attack took place at Jerusalem's Damascus Gate, which leads into the walled Old City.

The site has seen numerous stabbings during a wave of violence over the past four months.

But in previous attacks, only knives were used. The fact that three attackers acted jointly was also unusual.

The assailants were Palestinians aged 20 and 21 from the northern West Bank town of Qabatya, police said.

Israeli officials spoke of an "escalation."

Since early October, Palestinians have launched over 100 knife attacks against Israelis, protesting perceived Israeli violations - denied by Israel - at a disputed Jerusalem holy site and the ongoing occupation.

More than 140 Palestinians have been killed in the wave of violence in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Israel.  Most of the Palestinian dead were knife attackers, shot while stabbing or attempting to stab Israel security forces or civilians.

Some 26 Israelis have been killed.

Two pipe bombs which failed to explode in Wednesday's attack at Damascus Gate were neutralized, police said.
