Turkish opposition leader unharmed in convoy attacked, soldier killed

One soldier was killed and two injured when a convoy carrying the leader of Turkey's main opposition party was attacked Thursday in a rural, mountainous area of the country's north-east.

Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the head of the centre-left People's Republican Party (CHP), briefly spoke with broadcaster NTV after the attack and said he was in good health and in a safe area.

Interior Minister Efkan Al said three soldiers were injured, including one in serious condition, adding that the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) was the primary suspect.

The state-run Anadolu news agency said one soldier later died in hospital.

Investigations and a manhunt were under way, Ala said. It remained unclear if Kilicdaroglu himself was the target.

Footage of Kilicdaroglu shortly after showed him being ferried away from the scene in an armoured vehicle, surrounded by several armed police officers, soldiers and plainclothes guards, their guns and assault rifles drawn.

NTV also aired footage showing bodyguards and police firing back into a forested area of the mountains in Atvin province, near the Black Sea, shortly after the initial attack.

NTV and the CHP, the largest opposition party in Turkey, said there was information a rocket launch was also planned but was thwarted.

"I condemn this loathsome attack," said Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, from the conservative Justice and Development Party (AKP).
