Two dead as typhoon hits Taiwan

Severe rain and wind brought by Typhoon Nepartak killed at least two people and injured dozens in Taiwan, authorities said Friday.

The storm made landfall in the south-eastern county of Taitung at 5:50 am Friday (2150 GMT Thursday).

One unidentified man died after being swept off a beach in the eastern county of Hualien.

A soldier on an island in the Taiwan Strait fell into the sea while fishing. His body was found early Friday.

At least 66 people in the eastern region were hit by falling trees or injured by glass, an official at the Central Emergency Operation Centre said.

More than 390,000 families were left without electricity and 5,200 families without tap water.

Authorities issued landslide warnings for more than 700 mountainous areas due to increasing water levels in rivers. More than 15,000 residents were evacuated.

The typhoon was expected to linger around Taiwan through Friday and move on toward southern China, the Central Weather Bureau said.

Winds gusting to more than 200 kilometres per hour were detected by weather stations, it said.

Local TV news images showed winds flipping over cars and breaking windows in Taitung City.

On Friday, Taiwan Railways suspended some services, including the high-speed trains. More than 300 international flights were also cancelled, authorities said.
