Typhoon Mindulle batters Tokyo area, disrupting transport

A powerful typhoon accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain pounded eastern and north-eastern Japan Monday, disrupting transport in the regions.

Dozens of people were injured, many of them in falls caused by the strong wind. Hundreds of thousands were urged to evacuate their homes in the greater Tokyo area and the north-east, broadcaster NHK reported.

Some areas, including the cities of Ome and Iruma in the Kanto region, saw record rainfall of about 100 millimetres per hour, local media reported.

As Typhoon Mindulle was heading off to the north-east and the island of Hokkaido, weather authorities were warning of mudslides, flooding, swollen rivers and high waves in those regions and eastern Japan.

Rainfall of up to 200 millimetres was predicted for Hokkaido by Tuesday evening, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The bad weather caused the cancellation of more than 500 flights, while the runways of the Narita International Airport near Tokyo were temporarily closed.

Train services, including Shinkansen bullet trains, were delayed and cancelled.

This was the ninth typhoon of this season. It was around the city of Hitachiomiya, about 100 kilometres north-east of Tokyo as of 6 pm (0900 GMT), travelling north-north-east at 35 kilometres per hour (km/h), with maximum sustained winds of 108 km/h and gusts of 144 km/h, the agency said.

The typhoon made landfall at the city of Tateyama, 80 kilometres south of the capital, at around 12:30 pm (0330 GMT), the agency said.

Meanwhile, a man was found dead on an inundated street in the city of Kitami on Hokkaido Monday, where Typhoon Kompasu caused flooding the previous day. The typhoon weakened to a tropical depression overnight after making landfall on the city of Kushiro.
