UAE names ministers for happiness and tolerance

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Wednesday created ministries for happiness and tolerance as part of a major cabinet shake-up in the oil-rich country, the official news agency WAM reported, with both portfolios going to women.

Ohoud Khalfan has been named minister of state for happiness in the 29-member government, according to the agency.

"Happiness in our country is not a wish. But there will be plans, projects, programmes and indictators [to enhance happiness]," Prime Minister Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum said in a tweet. "It will be part of the work of all ministries and part of our lifestyle."

The ministry of tolerance portfolio has gone to Lubna al-Qasimi in the new government that features eight newcomers, including five women.

A third woman, Shamma Suhail, 22, has been appointed minister of state for youth, becoming the youngest member of the government, WAM reported.

The UAE, a federation of seven emirates, is home to several faiths and nationalities.
