UN condemns war crimes after 14 bodies found in Libya's Benghazi

Fourteen unidentified bodies, victims of execution-style slayings, have been discovered in a garbage dump in the volatile eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, independent Libyan news website Alwasat reported on Friday.

The handcuffed bodies, which were found on Thursday, bore signs of torture, the report added, citing an unnamed official at the Benghazi Medical Centre.

The 14 were killed with shots to the head, the official added. Beyond that, the circumstances of the alleged executions were not immediately clear.

UN envoy for Libya Martin Kobler condemned the incident, calling it a “war crime.”

“Utterly shocked and dismayed by the summary execution of a number of people in Benghazi. This is a war crime,” the German diplomat said in a tweet.

"I request immediate investigations. Those responsible must be held accountable and brought to justice,” Kobler added.

There was no official comment.

But Alwasat said that the city's authorities had opened an inquiry into the incident.

Benghazi was the birthplace of the 2011 armed revolt that toppled long-time dictator Moamer Gaddafi.

The city has since seen a series of deadly attacks and abductions.

In recent months, Libyan forces led by powerful military chief Khalifa Haftar have intensified their attacks to dislodge Islamist insurgents from Benghazi.

Libya has descended into chaos since Gaddafi’s toppling amid proliferation of arms and rival militia.
