UN envoy expects Syrian presidential election in 18 months

Syrian presidential and parliamentary elections are expected in 18 months, the UN special envoy on Syria, Staffan de Mistura, said in an interview published Friday by Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.

He said the elections, to be observed by the United Nations, should take place in a year and a half from the start of the latest round of peace talks between Syria's government and opposition, planned for March 14.

De Mistura said he expected an agreement for such elections to be signed during the talks.

But he warned that "such documents are important, but in practice it often happens that the signed principles are not carried out if there is not genuine consent to them."
