UN envoy: Outside powers must act on Syria ceasefire

UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura, speaking after his first formal meeting with Syrian opposition representatives, says that outside powers involved in the conflict must act to ensure a ceasefire in tandem with peace talks in Geneva.

De Mistura says he expects the International Syria Support Group, which brings together backers of both government and opposition, to "convene very soon to ensure that what we're doing has international support."

"They themselves will start helping ensuring that there will be a discussion about a ceasefire... that will be the strongest message to Syrians," de Mistura says.

Progress on humanitarian issues also requires "the involvement and pressure of those countries that have influence on it," he adds.
