UN envoy to share plans for new Syria peace talks on Friday

UN mediator Staffan De Mistura says he will provide "information regarding the resumption of Geneva talks" on war-torn Syria on Friday evening.

The UN envoy says his statement on restarting peace talks between the Syrian government and opposition will come after the midday deadline by which the conflict parties have to sign up to the ceasefire plan developed by the United States and Russia.

A task force of global and regional powers is scheduled to meet in Geneva Friday afternoon to work on details of the ceasefire, which will be followed by a UN Security Council meeting in New York, De Mistura added.
