UN envoy: Syrian truce still in effect, peace talks continue

The truce in Syria is still in effect despite mounting violence, but urgent steps are needed to salvage it, UN Syria peace mediator Staffan de Mistura says.

"According to all objective criteria, comparing to the past, the cessation of hostilities is still in effect," de Mistura tells reporters, adding that "none of the sides have renounced it."

"But it is in great trouble if we don't act quickly," he adds.

De Mistura says he has continued unofficial meetings with opposition envoys at the Geneva peace talks despite their official walk-out, and he announces that he will likely end the current round on Wednesday.
