UNHCR: Collective return of refugees to Turkey is illegal

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) slams EU-Turkish plans to return migrants from Greece to Turkey, pointing out that such a move would violate European and international laws.

"Collective expulsion is prohibited," says Vincent Cochetel, UNHCR's Europe regional chief.

A policy of blanket returns to a third country is not consistent with EU law nor with international law, he adds.

Cochetel warns that sending back all migrants, paying Turkey more money and easing EU entry policies for Turks will not provide a quick fix to the problem.
