US claims Islamic State movement's propaganda chief killed in strike

The propaganda chief of extremist group Islamic State was killed in an airstrike by forces of the US-led coalition fighting the militia in Iraq and Syria, according to the Pentagon.

Wa'il Adil Hasan Salman al-Fayad, alias Dr Wa'il, was killed in a "precision strike" on September 7 near Raqqah, the group's de facto Syrian capital, the US Defence Department said Friday.

US defence officials describe him as one of the most senior Islamic State leaders who functioned as information minister, in charge of the production of propaganda video that have frequently depicted torture and executions.

Wa'il was a member of the group's Shura Council of senior leaders and a "close associate" of Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, the Islamic State spokesman who was killed in an August 30 strike, the Pentagon said.

"The removal of [the Islamic State group's] senior leaders degrades its ability to retain territory and its ability to plan, finance, and direct attacks inside and outside of the region," Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said.

"We will continue to work with our coalition partners to build momentum in the campaign to deal [the Islamic State movement] a lasting defeat."
