US drone strike kills five in Pakistan

At least five people were killed Saturday when a US drone attacked a site in Pakistan’s restive tribal region.

The incident comes just days after a report that drone strikes dropped to an eight-year low in 2015.

The pilotless aircraft attacked a rebel hideout in the mountainous Shawal valley area of North Waziristan, one of seven tribal districts.

A security official said that five militants were killed, including senior Pakistani Taliban commander Noor Saeed.

“The identity of other killed in the attack is not known as yet,” he said on anonymity.

He said some militants were also injured.

It was the first attack of 2016 and came after the Bureau of Investigative Journalism reported Thursday that drone strikes in Pakistan dropped drastically to an eight-year low, just 13 last year, after peaking at 128 in 2010.

There have been at least 421 drone attacks in Pakistan since 2004, in which between about 2,500 to 4,000 people were killed, including between about 420 and 960 civilians, the bureau said.

Pakistan says drone attack are a violation of its sovereignty. However, the United States has so far refused to halt the strikes.
