US kills top al-Shabaab commander in drone strike in Somalia

The US has killed a top commander of the Islamist insurgent group al-Shabaab in an airstrike, Somali military official Ali Baashi Mohamed said Saturday.

Hassan Ali Dhoore and two other al-Shabaab fighters were killed in a drone attack near the southern city of Jilib.

Al-Shabaab has been fighting to create an Islamic state in the Horn of Africa for years. US drone attacks in Somalia have already killed several high-ranking fighters of the terrorist group.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said Friday that the United States had conducted airstrikes targeting Dhoore, but didn't say whether Dhoore had been killed in the strikes.

Al-Shabaab confirmed the airstrike from Thursday and said a traitor had been hanged as a result. In its radio message, the militia failed to confirm whether Dhoore was killed in the strike.

In Wadajir, a residential area of Mogadishu, al-Shabaab fighters killed two men in a drive-by shooting by unloading about 80 rounds of ammunition into them, according to a dpa reporter who witnessed the event.

Al-Shabaab later took responsibility for the shootings, saying the victims were members of Somali security services.

Another top commander and 22 other fighters of al-Shabaab were killed in a joint military operation between African Union forces (AMISOM) and the Somali National Army (SNA) just south of Mogadishu Friday night.

The local al-Shabaab commander Janaale Abdirashir Buqdube was killed in the operation near Janale, AMISOM said in a statement Saturday.
