US Olympic swimmer Lochte charged by Brazil authorities: media

Brazilian police have charged US swimming star Ryan Lochte with making a false statement after he claimed to have been robbed at gunpoint during the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, media reported on Thursday.

The 32-year old gold medallist had said that he and three of his team mates were held at gunpoint and robbed by men posing as police officers after a party in the city.

However footage from a CCTV camera showed one of the swimmers vandalizing a petrol station.

Lochte's case has been handed over to the state prosecutor and charges have been filed, according to a police spokesman quoted by news portal G1.
