US says Chinese jet made "unsafe" intercept of spy plane

A Chinese fighter jet intercepted a US spy plane in international airspace over the East China Sea in an "unsafe" manner, the US Pacific Command said Wednesday.

The reconnaissance aircraft was on a routine patrol over the East China Sea on June 7 local time when it was intercepted by two Chinese J-10 fighter jets, a spokesman for US Pacific Command said.

"One of the intercepting Chinese jets had an unsafe excessive rate of closure on the RC-135 aircraft," the emailed statement said.

"Initial assessment is that this seems to be a case of improper airmanship, as no other provocative or unsafe maneuvers occurred."

"The Department of Defense is addressing the issue with China in appropriate diplomatic and military channels," it added.

Last month at least two Chinese J-11 tactical aircraft reportedly intercepted another US reconnaissance plane in an "unsafe" manner, officials said.
