US swimmer Lochte to be suspended for 10 months over Brazil "robbery"

US Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte will be suspended for 10 months by the US Olympic Committee and USA Swimming for fabricating an account of being robbed at the Rio Olympics, local media reported Wednesday.

The ban, which has not yet been announced publicly, means Lochte will be unable to compete at the 2017 World Championships to be held in Hungary, CNN said citing a source with knowledge of the situation.

The 32-year-old gold medallist was charged by Brazilian police with making a false statement after he said that he and three of his team mates were held at gunpoint and robbed by men posing as police officers after a party in the city.

He later admitted that what he had initially told Brazilian authorities was an "over exaggeration".

Brazilian police said the swimmers vandalized a bathroom door at a gas station and were confronted by armed security guards.

Swimwear-maker Speedo and designer clothing company Ralph Lauren ended their sponsorship arrangements with Lochte as a result of the incident.

Speedo said it would donate 50,000 dollars of his fee to the charity Save The Children to help Brazilian children.
