US takes in nearly 85,000 refugees in 2016, plans for 110,000 in 2017

The United States accepted just under 85,000 refugees in fiscal year 2016, the US State Department said Monday.

Of the 84,995 refugees taken in by September 30, the end of the 2016 fiscal year, 72 per cent were women and children, said spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau.

The refugees came from 79 countries, with 70 per cent from just five nations: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Syria, Burma, Iraq and Somalia, "where protracted conflicts have driven millions from their home," Trudeau said.

The US plans to take in 110,000 refugees in fiscal year 2017, Trudeau added, an increase of 57 per cent over 2015.

The Obama administration had announced its intentions for the increase last month.

In a related matter, a federal appeals court on Monday announced a unanimous decision against Governor Mike Pence of Indiana, affirming a lower court injunction on Pence's executive order to bar the resettlement of Syrian refugees in his state.

Pence is currently the running mate of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
