The president of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov, has been taken to hospital, according to a government statement published Sunday.
The examination and treatment of the 78-year-old head of state will take a longer period of time, the Russian news agency Interfax reported, citing medical specialists. No other information was provided.
Karimov, who has led the former Soviet country since before its independence in 1991, is considered corrupt by many observers. He previously served as a Soviet party official and has disbanded political opposition groups in the country.
