Vietnam fighter jet goes missing in training, crash reported at sea

A Vietnamese air force fighter jet lost contact with air traffic control Tuesday while training in the central part of the country.

“We are preparing means to be ready to carry out search and rescue,” Luu Duc Tung, deputy head of Vietnam Maritime Rescue Coordination Center, told dpa.

The Russian-built Su30-MK2 jet fighter, carrying two pilots, lost contact at 8:15 am (0115 GMT) over Nghe An province, Thanh Nien newsper reported.

The air force's deputy commdander, Major General Do Minh Tuan, confirmed the aircraft was missing, Tuoi Tre reported.

A local fisherman informed the rescue force at 8:30 am that he saw a plane crash in the sea near Hon Mat island not far from the coast, the Thanh Nien report said.

Phan Xuan Hai, a coast guard official, said his unit has sent three ships with 35 people to search for the plane, but has not found it yet, it said.

The long-range strike fighter Su30-MK2 was developed by the Sukhoi Company.
