Woman rescued six days after Nairobi building collapse

Kenyan rescuers have found a woman alive in the rubble of a building that collapsed six days earlier in the capital Nairobi, the country’s Red Cross said on Thursday.

The woman was taken to hospital, the Red Cross tweeted.

The newspaper Daily Nation said soldiers removed rubble to rescue the woman, who was weak but had no visible injuries.

She had been trapped in a corner and was put on oxygen and intravenous fluid before being rescued, the newspaper quoted a Red Cross official as saying.

Four days after the collapse, a 6-month-old baby girl was rescued, reportedly without serious injuries.

Rescuers meanwhile pulled out five bodies late Wednesday and early Thursday, bringing the death toll to 33, police said.

Nearly 140 people have been rescued alive while about 80 remain missing.

Rescuers were also searching for bodies along a nearby river after witnesses said the collapse of the six-storey building had hurled people in that direction.

The government was reportedly planning to demolish dozens of buildings in Nairobi’s Huruma district, where the building collapsed, saying they could face the same fate.

A Nairobi court on Wednesday released on bail two men who were believed to be the owners of the building.
