Zagreb Pride marchers call for defence of LGBT community's freedoms

This year's Pride Parade in Zagreb, the 15th such event in the Croatian capital, drew several thousand people who went on a march through the city centre, from Franklin Roosevelt Square to the Ribnjak park.

Pride marchers carried balloons and flags of various colours as well as banners with messages such as "O beautiful, o dear, o sweet freedom", "End to injustice" and "Hate is not a family value".

The event's organisers said this year's parade was being held amidst attacks on hard-won human freedoms. "There is a real danger that a number of human rights that have been won and the achievements of open and public advocacy of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersexual and queer persons will be minimised or annulled."

The organisers also said the parade was a way of "demonstrating dissatisfaction and concern about the direction Croatia and its society are going in."

It is time that acquired rights and civil freedoms are defended and that a joint fight is launched to contribute to building an open society based on solidarity, democracy, diversity, love and acceptance, they said.

"Our message that we will never again return into silence must be the loudest ever," Pride organisers said.

The Zagreb Pride parade was supported by several civil society associations whose members and sympathisers joined in the march.
